The story behind
Pois é, according to DoReSol
The recording of Pois é, a track lasting just one minute and forty-four seconds, was born during a very special moment for Elis Regina. The chance to create an album alongside Antonio Carlos Jobim, a towering figure in Brazilian music, arose as a gift for her ten years with the Philips record label. The sessions for this project, titled Elis & Tom, took place in February and March 1974 at MGM Studios in Los Angeles, California.
In this collaborative album, Elis Regina and Tom Jobim joined forces, resulting in a work that blends the elegance of bossa nova with innovative arrangements. The arrangements, handled by César Camargo Mariano—who was Elis’s husband at the time—introduced electric instruments to the genre, lending a fresh sonority. Pois é, like other pieces on the album such as Águas de Março (which became the album’s biggest hit) and Corcovado, is performed with remarkable delicacy and restraint. Sound engineering was overseen by Humberto Gatica, while production was led by Aloysio de Oliveira. This musical encounter, released in August 1974 by Polygram, stands as a testament to the depth and talent of two giants of Brazilian music.
