The story behind
Modinha, according to DoReSol
The recording of Modinha, alongside Tom Jobim, was a special gift for Elis Regina, celebrating a decade of her ties with the Philips record label. The full album, Elis & Tom, was a project that united two leading figures of popular music in Brazil. The recording sessions took place at MGM Studios in Los Angeles, California, between late February and early March 1974. The pianist and arranger César Camargo Mariano, who was Elis’s husband at the time, brought an innovative vision by incorporating electric instruments into the bossa nova sound, giving the interpretation of classics in the genre a distinctive texture.
Elis Regina Carvalho Costa, born in Porto Alegre in 1945, became a fundamental voice in Brazilian popular music. Her rendition of Modinha, lasting 2 minutes and 17 seconds, is part of this influential album. The production of these sessions was led by Aloysio de Oliveira, while the recording engineering was handled by Humberto Gatica. The artist passed away in São Paulo in 1982, leaving behind a significant legacy in her country’s music.
