The story behind
Charly García recorded Total inferencia at ION Studios in Buenos Aires, but the sound captured on the album doesn’t sound like Buenos Aires. During the process, he mixed the tapes at Electric Lady Studios in New York, where the air conditioning and old cables gave the guitars a metallic sheen. He wasn’t aiming to polish every note: the album Piano Bar (1984) ended up with layers of distortion and intertwined vocals like frayed wires. The song isn’t just one track—it’s a collision of rhythms where the piano and guitar push against each other without surrendering.
The record was assembled in three weeks, with live takes and minimal overdubs. Charly played almost everything himself, as if each instrument were a conversation he couldn’t wait to have. The performance at Estadio Luna Park showcased that controlled chaos: the audience chanted lyrics that still sound defiant today. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it among the best of Argentine rock, but what’s most striking is how Total inferencia resists domestication. It’s not a song to sing along to in the car, but to listen to with headphones on and let the echoes of the live recording envelop you.
