Intro 1
Verse 1
Is it an horrific dream?
Am I sinking fast?
Could a person be so mean
As to laugh and laugh
Pre-Chorus 1
On my own
Could you ease my load?
Could you see my pain?
Could you please explain
Interlude 1
The hurting
Verse 2
Could you understand a child
When he cries in pain?
Could you give him all he needs
Or do you feel the same?
Pre-Chorus 2
All along
You've been told you're wrong
When you felt it right
And you're left to fight
Chorus 1
The hurting
The hurt, hurt, hurt
The hurt, hurt, hurt
Interlude 2
Bridge 1
Get in line with the things you know
Feel the pain, feel the sorrow
Touch the hurt and don't let go
Don't let go, don't let go
Get in line with the things you know
Learn to cry, like a baby
Then the hurting won't come back
Won't come back, won't come back
Chorus 2
The hurt, hurt, hurt
The hurt, hurt, hurt
Outro 1
Is it an horrific dream?
...hurt, hurt
Is it an horrific dream?
...hurt, hurt
Is it an horrific dream?
...hurt, hurt
Is it an horrific dream?
...hurt, hurt
Is it an horrific dream?
...hurt, hurt
Is it an horrific dream?
...hurt, hurt
Repeat and fade
Tears for Fears released The Hurting in March 1983. It was the band's first album, recorded between 1981 and 1983. The album is based on themes such as child abuse, trauma and depression. Although the music is dark, the album was a success. It contains three singles that reached top 5 in the UK and top 40 internationally: "Mad World", "Change" and "Pale Shelter". It also includes a new version of "Suffer the Children", which had already been released before. The album was remastered in 1999 and re-released in 2013 with a special edition. In 2023 a new vinyl and Blu-ray version was released. It was produced by Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum. Roland Orzabal wrote the songs inspired by his own traumas and the ideas of Arthur Janov. The music blends new wave, synth-pop and gothic rock.
