The story behind
Broken, according to DoReSol
The song Broken by Tears for Fears has an interesting origin, as it was born from a piece called We Are Broken, originally released as a B-side in 1983. The duo took that base, sped up its tempo, and gave it a more rock-oriented approach to transform it into what we know today. What’s notable is that Broken is interwoven with Head Over Heels on the album The Hurting, forming a kind of mini-suite. This is because they share a similar melody, and at around 0:52 in Broken, you can hear an accelerated version of the introduction to Head Over Heels.
The Hurting, the debut album by Tears for Fears, was released on March 7, 1983. Despite tackling deep and sometimes dark themes such as child abuse, psychological trauma, and depression, the record achieved notable commercial success. It reached number one on the UK album charts and was certified Gold within weeks, later becoming Platinum in January 1985. The album also charted in the Top 40 in several countries, including Canada, Germany, and Australia. The production of Broken was handled by Ross Cullum.
