The story behind
The song That's Not Me, part of The Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds, stands out for its complex harmonic structure and abrupt changes in its atmosphere and instrumental textures. In fact, it is the piece on Pet Sounds that most closely resembles a conventional rock song, largely due to its simpler orchestration compared to other tracks on the album. The lyrics narrate a young man's journey in search of his identity and autonomy, culminating in the realization that he prefers the company of a partner to a solitary life dedicated to his ambitions.
Recorded in February 1966 at Hollywood's Western Studios, the production was overseen by Brian Wilson, with the collaboration of his band and producer Terry Melcher. On this song, Mike Love shares lead vocals with Brian Wilson, who also plays the distinctive organ with a vibrant sound. Brian's brothers, Carl and Dennis Wilson, contribute guitar and drums respectively. It is interesting to note that, unlike other songs on Pet Sounds where session musicians were used, on That's Not Me the members of The Beach Boys did play the instruments. Alan Jardine has also been associated with percussion, and Bruce Johnston was present in the control room assisting in the session's direction alongside engineer Chuck Britz. The musical composition is by Brian Wilson and the lyrics by Tony Asher, although the latter expressed some dissatisfaction with his work on the lyrics at the time, feeling he had not fully captured the essence of the music.
