The story behind
Let's imagine a conversation between two young people dreaming of a future together, a future where freedom and romance are possible. That is the essence of *Wouldn't It Be Nice*, the track that opens the album *Pet Sounds* by The Beach Boys. The song transports us to that fantasy of growing up, of longing for adulthood that would allow a relationship to be lived fully. It is a melody that, despite its optimistic sound, speaks of the frustrations of youth, of desiring something that cannot yet be had, and of the waiting that this implies. Brian Wilson, who composed the music with Tony Asher and Mike Love, envisioned this scene with a special vibration, seeking to capture that feeling in the recording.
The production of *Wouldn't It Be Nice* was a meticulous process. Between January and April 1966, Brian Wilson worked with the band's musicians and sixteen studio instrumentalists at the Gold Star and Columbia studios in Hollywood. Instruments such as drums, timpani, glockenspiel, trumpets, saxophones, accordions, guitars, pianos, and double bass were used. A distinctive sonic detail is the harp-like sound in the introduction, achieved with a 12-string mandolin connected directly to the recording console. The song also incorporates a *ritardando*, a resource uncommon in pop music of the time, and the band strived for perfection in the multiple vocal parts that Wilson demanded. In fact, this recording took more time than any other on the album. The single, released in July, reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
