The story behind
When Chicago decided to release Stay the Night as the first single from their album Chicago 17 in 1984, it was an unexpected move. While everyone expected a ballad, the band opted for something more energetic and distinct. This song departed from the classic sound of vocal harmonies and brass that characterized them, featuring a powerful drum beat, synthesizers, and a lead vocal in a higher register. The result was a track that captured attention, becoming one of the most added singles on the radio that week and reaching number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The recording of Stay the Night featured the participation of Jeff Porcaro, the drummer for Toto, in place of Chicago's usual drummer, Danny Seraphine. The production was handled by David Foster, who also co-wrote the song with Peter Cetera, the lead vocalist on this track. The music video, filmed around the Los Angeles River, added a dynamic visual element with a car chase featuring a 1968 Oldsmobile 442. The video was directed by Gilbert Bettman Jr., and featured Ingrid Anderson playing the woman and Debbie Evans performing the stunts. The release of this single was key for radio stations that had not played Chicago in a long time to include them in their programming again. The album Chicago 17, released in May 1984, would become the band's best-selling to date, exceeding 6.1 million copies in various countries, and the success of its music videos, including that of Stay the Night, contributed to it achieving multiple platinum certifications.
