The story behind

When one delves into the recording of Hard Habit to Break, they encounter a production that David Foster himself described, in a 2024 conversation, as "the most perfect, or closest to perfect, I have ever produced." This song, released in 1984, became a high point for Chicago, reaching number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also on the Adult Contemporary chart. Foster's production, who also handled the arrangements, along with Humberto Gatica's work as recording engineer, gave the song a sonic complexity that was noted by critics of the time. It was mentioned that the piece transitioned between acoustic, electric, and orchestrated elements, creating a distinctive sound.

The composition of Hard Habit to Break was handled by Steve Kipner and John Lewis Parker. The recording for the album Chicago 17 featured lead vocals shared by Bill Champlin and Peter Cetera. The track was nominated for four Grammy Awards, and Foster along with Jeremy Lubbock took home the award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists. Chicago was also nominated in the Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal categories. Even Cetera and Foster received a nomination for Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices. The songwriters Kipner and Parker, for their part, were recognized with an ASCAP award in 1986 for being the most performed song. The song's title, moreover, served as the slogan for a hot dog stand called Demon Dogs, owned by the band's manager.
