The story behind
The raw energy of *Space Truckin’* was conceived in an unconventional setting: a closed hotel in Montreux, Switzerland. The idea was to capture the power of Deep Purple live, far from the neatness of a traditional studio. To achieve this, they rented the mobile studio of The Rolling Stones. However, an unexpected incident, a fire during a Frank Zappa concert at the local casino, forced them to improvise. They ended up setting up their equipment in the Grand Hôtel, a place closed for the winter, transforming it into their temporary recording space. This album, Machine Head, was the result of that search for sonic authenticity, and Space Truckin’, with its 4:36 duration, is a clear example of that intention.
This song is part of the British band's sixth studio album, Machine Head, which was recorded in December 1971 and released in March 1972. The lineup that brought this work to life, known as "Mark II", included Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on keyboards, Ian Paice on drums, and Roger Glover on bass. This formation, which was active in different periods between 1969 and 1993, is remembered for being one of the most successful of Deep Purple, a band that formed in Hertford, United Kingdom, in 1968 and has been recognized for its influence on hard rock and heavy metal, also fusing elements of other genres.
