The story behind

When you dive into *Pictures of Home*, you encounter the raw energy of Deep Purple at its peak. The song kicks off with a drum intro that instantly grabs you, courtesy of Ian Paice, and from there on, it's a whirlwind. You'll hear a powerful guitar riff and a bass line that hit you head-on, all sprinkled with moments for instrumental solos to shine. What truly sets this piece apart is how Jon Lord's distorted Hammond sound intertwines, creating an immersive atmosphere. Even Roger Glover gets his space for a brief bass solo in the middle, before Ritchie Blackmore sets you up for the final takeoff, with an ending that surprises you with an unexpected pause and a triumphant return.

This piece was recorded between December 6th and 21st, 1971, in Montreux, Switzerland, as part of the sessions for the album Machine Head. The band's goal was to have more time to record outside a conventional studio and capture a sound closer to their live performances. To achieve this, they rented The Rolling Stones' mobile studio and planned to use the Montreux casino. However, a fire during a Frank Zappa concert destroyed the venue. The solution was to improvise at the Grand Hôtel, which was closed for the season, adapting it for recordings. It's interesting to note that, out of all the songs on Machine Head, *Pictures of Home* was the only one not played live during the 1972 tour. In fact, Blackmore refused to perform it. It wasn't until 1994, with the arrival of Steve Morse, that the song became a recurring element in concerts, eventually becoming the opening song for the Rapture of the Deep tour in 2005.
