The story behind
The track Maybe I’m a Leo, with its 4:57 runtime, immerses us in one of the songs from Deep Purple's album Machine Head. This recording, made in December 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland, aimed to capture the energy of their live performances. To achieve this, the band rented The Rolling Stones' mobile studio. However, an unexpected incident during a Frank Zappa concert, which caused a fire at the Montreux casino, forced them to find a new space. They ended up adapting the Grand Hôtel, which was closed for the winter season, to be able to record. The result was a sound that felt rawer and more direct, close to what the audience experienced at their concerts.
The British band Deep Purple, formed in Hertford, UK, in 1968, is recognized for being one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal. Throughout their career, they have explored various influences, from progressive rock to classical music. The lineup that recorded Machine Head, known as "Mark II", consisted of Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on keyboards, Ian Paice on drums, and Roger Glover on bass. This lineup, considered one of the group's most successful, was active in different periods, leaving a significant mark on rock history.
