The story behind

Something in the Water (Does Not Compute), according to DoReSol

The recording of Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) has an interesting history. The rhythmic foundation was conceived in mid-April 1982 at Prince's home studio on Kiowa Trail, Chanhassen, Minnesota. A few days later, on April 28th, the song was re-recorded at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California. This re-recording process occurred just after tracking How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore and before an original take of Raspberry Beret, and also days before Automatic.

This track, which is the seventh on the album 1999, had a particular fate. Eleven months after the album was released, it appeared as the B-side of the fourth single, Automatic, which was released only in Australia. Later, in 2019, an early version of the song was included on the album Vault Tracks part 1, as part of a special edition of the album 1999. Additionally, in October 2013, a rehearsal recording made at Paisley Park Studios was shared on YouTube, and the following day it was available on 3rdEyeTunes.com.
