The story behind
Smoke and Mirrors, according to DoReSol
The song *Smoke and Mirrors* by the Bee Gees, with its five-minute duration, unfolds as a piece that invites reflection, drawing the listener into its atmosphere. The music's authorship rests with the three Gibb brothers: Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, and Robin Gibb, who also participated in the arrangement work alongside Russ Titelman. In recording engineering were Steve Eigner and Mike Viola, while mixing was handled by Joe Lizzi, Dave O’Donnell, and Russ Titelman himself. Production, as on many other occasions, was led by Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, and Robin Gibb, along with Russ Titelman.
This track is part of the album *Still Waters*, released in March 1997 in the United Kingdom and in May of the same year in the United States. The recording of this album featured the collaboration of several renowned producers, including Russ Titelman, David Foster, Hugh Padgham, and Arif Mardin. The context of *Still Waters*' creation was marked by a prior event: the postponement of a tour planned for 1994, which was to promote the album *Size Isn't Everything* (1993). This cancellation was due to health problems of Barry Gibb, specifically arthritis in his back and right knee. Following the tour's suspension, a project of acoustic versions of songs written by the Bee Gees for other artists was announced, which would eventually be known as *Love Songs*.
