The story behind
Closer Than Close, according to DoReSol
When you dive into Closer Than Close, you encounter a piece that, although it lasts 4:34, condenses a story of collaboration and sound. The recording of this song, part of the album Still Waters, involved a team of renowned producers such as Russ Titelman, David Foster, Hugh Padgham, and Arif Mardin. The sound engineering work fell to John Merchant, while the production was handled by the Gibb brothers themselves: Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, and Robin Gibb. This detail of the members of The Bee Gees being directly involved in the production speaks to their deep control over their sound.
The context for the creation of Still Waters, released in March 1997 in the United Kingdom and May of the same year in the United States, had its peculiarities. In 1994, a tour planned to promote Size Isn't Everything had to be postponed due to back and knee arthritis problems for Barry Gibb. After the cancellation, Robin Gibb had spoken to the press about a project of acoustic covers of songs they had written for other artists, which later materialized in part on the album Love Songs. Although Closer Than Close is not one of those acoustic songs, it was conceived during a period when the band was exploring different creative paths, demonstrating the resilience and constant sonic quest of The Bee Gees.
