The story behind
When you dive into I Could Not Love You More, you encounter a pop ballad that the Bee Gees recorded in Los Angeles during March 1996. The song, written by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, was part of their album Still Waters, released in 1997. The track was released as the second single from that album and had an interesting reception on the charts, reaching number 14 in the United Kingdom and appearing on several charts in Europe. The British magazine Music Week gave it a rating of three out of five, describing it as a soft ballad, though doubting it could match the success of Alone. The music video accompanying I Could Not Love You More shows the band performing the song against a black background and on a street, interspersed with scenes narrating a relationship between a man and a woman, and includes images of two children on a pier.
The production of this track was handled by the Gibb brothers themselves along with David Foster. I Could Not Love You More was officially released on June 9, 1997, with Love Never Dies as the B-side. The album Still Waters, of which it is a part, is the twenty-first and penultimate studio work by the Bee Gees. This album, which was released in the United Kingdom on March 10, 1997, through Polydor Records, featured collaborations with several renowned producers, including Russ Titelman, David Foster, Hugh Padgham, and Arif Mardin. It is worth remembering that in 1994, a tour planned to promote Size Isn't Everything (1993) had to be postponed due to Barry Gibb's arthritis problems. After the cancellation, Robin Gibb had commented that the group was working on a project of acoustic covers of songs written for other artists, which would eventually be known as Love Songs. The song's mix was done by Mick Guzauski and Mamie Riley.
