The story behind
She Caught the Train, according to DoReSol
This short and direct song is an unexpected turn within the album Labour of Love, where UB40 dedicated themselves to covering classics. "She Caught the Train" doesn’t aim to stand out for its length — just 3:17 — but rather for its catchy rhythm and that dub vibe the band managed to infuse into it. The track has a steady, almost hypnotic pulse that invites you to tap your feet without any complications. It’s neither a ballad nor an epic song: it’s a piece that flows naturally, as if made to sound on a train ride or on any ordinary afternoon.
They recorded it in Birmingham with Howard Gray at the helm of the console and production handled by Ray “Pablo” Falconer alongside UB40 themselves. The result fit perfectly into an album that, although today is remembered for hits like "Red Red Wine", includes gems like this one that go unnoticed but are no less special. The album Labour of Love was released in September 1983 and, although it didn’t take off in the United States at the time — where it only reached position 39 — over the years it gradually gained ground until returning to the charts in 1988.
