The story behind

Al Stewart wrote Sand in Your Shoes as part of his album Year of the Cat, released in 1976. The song was recorded before Stewart had a title for any of the songs on the album. He wrote everything, from the music to the orchestration, before thinking about what to name it. In a Canadian interview, he said he did this with six of his albums. Each song had up to four versions of lyrics. Sand in Your Shoes was born from a song he wrote in 1966 called Foot of the Stage, with lyrics that already anticipated something that would happen later.
