Lord Grenville

The story behind

Al Stewart wrote Lord Grenville as part of his album Year of the Cat, released in 1976. The song was recorded before Stewart had a title for any of his songs, something he did for six of his albums. He would write the music and full orchestration before thinking about the lyrics. The song is based on an idea Stewart had since 1966, when he wrote a song called Foot of the Stage, with lyrics that already anticipated something that would later come true. The song lasts five minutes and two seconds, and has a lot of people listening to it on Last.fm.
