The story behind
The rhythmic base of Rock the House kicks off with a horn sample taken from Modesty Blaise, a composition by British jazz musician John Dankworth. This track became the third single from Gorillaz's self-titled debut album, released in October 2001. The peculiarity of this song lies in the fact that the vocals are exclusively handled by Del the Funky Homosapien, making him the only guest artist on the track. The recording took place in 2000, and the full album, which explores an amalgam of genres such as trip hop, rap rock, hip hop, and Latin music, saw the light of day in March 2001 under the Parlophone label.
The music video for Rock the House, directed by Jamie Hewlett and Pete Candeland, emerged from a conflict situation. Hewlett channeled his frustration over a lawsuit initiated by another band, nicknamed Doppelgangerz, who alleged that Gorillaz was a stolen idea. This feeling of being "under attack" was visually translated into the video's narrative. The story unfolds at Kong Studios, where a mysterious fog causes Russel to lose consciousness. Immediately after, Del's spirit emerges from the ground, unleashing a series of billiard ball shots that the band members try to dodge with dance moves and even improvised equipment. Despite their efforts, 2-D and Murdoc are hit, and Russel's intervention, upon waking, causes Del to disappear. The total duration of the album version is 4:09.
