The story behind

The song Resistance, which gives its name to Muse's fifth studio album, The Resistance, released in 2009, delves into literary references, evoking the dystopian world of George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. This thematic connection is perceived in the atmosphere of the piece, which was written by Matthew Bellamy, the band's vocalist, guitarist, and pianist. The song was presented as the third single from the album, following Uprising and Undisclosed Desires, and its official release took place on February 22, 2010. The track also found its place in the promotion of the last part of the BBC series Silent Witness, and in a preview for the show Human Target. Additionally, the band shared a puzzle on their Facebook page in February 2010, which, when solved, revealed content about the creation of Resistance. The song was included as downloadable content for the music video game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

The production of Resistance took place between 2008 and 2009 at Bellini studios, located in Lake Como, Italy. The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, premiered on January 14, 2010, and features footage of the band's live performance during their The Resistance Tour, specifically at the Palacio de los Deportes in Madrid, Spain, on November 28, 2009. The song performed well on music charts: it reached number 35 on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2009 and debuted at number 17 on the Hot30 Countdown on February 22, 2010. Subsequently, on March 26, 2010, it entered the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown at number 20, reaching as high as number 9. In the United Kingdom, Resistance debuted at number two on the UK Rock Chart on February 21, 2010, and on February 28 of the same year, the single entered the UK Singles Chart at number 38, surpassing the previous single, Undisclosed Desires. That same week, Resistance climbed to the number one position on the UK Rock Chart. By March 20, the song jumped from sixth to first place on the Billboard Alternative Rock Chart, becoming their second number one on that list, along with Uprising. Resistance was nominated for two Grammy Awards at its 53rd edition: Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song, although it did not win in either category. In 2011, the Croatian group 2Cellos performed a cello cover of the song. The band Muse frequently included Resistance in their concerts, both on The Resistance Tour and The 2nd Law Tour, and on more occasional dates during the Drones World Tour. A live version of the song was included on Live at Rome Olympic Stadium.
