The story behind
This song doesn't sound like the rest of the album 3. It's not just because of the title, which already warns upfront that it will deal with something intense, but also because of how Alejandro Sanz builds the chorus: that melody that twists in on itself like slow poison, with an unexpected vocal turn that seems to change direction just when the listener thinks they've got it figured out. The acoustic guitar that opens it doesn't lie: it sounds like a confession in half-light, but the bass that enters afterward gives it a weight that isn't accidental. It's as if the song breathes in two distinct tempos, one intimate and the other more urgent, until the chorus explodes with that unforgettable line: "Quiero morir en tu veneno" ("I want to die in your poison"). It's not a desire for destruction, but for total surrender, and that's where the magic lies: the listener doesn't know if it's love or addiction that's being sung, but they know it's real.
They recorded it in Madrid in early 1995, at a time when Alejandro Sanz had already proven he could connect with audiences in Spain and Latin America without needing to adapt to formulas. The album 3 was released in June of that year, but this track in particular had something different: it wasn't one of the four songs they promoted with videos, and yet it ended up being one of the most remembered. He wrote the lyrics himself, as with the rest of the album, but this time the result sounded so personal that they even recorded versions in Portuguese and Italian, something they didn't do with the others. It lasted 4 minutes and 3 seconds, just enough time for the poison to take effect.
