Released on May 14, 1984, this work became Chicago's best-selling to date, surpassing 6.1 million copies in key markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. The album greatly benefited from the production of David Foster, who was also behind their previous record. The duration of *Prima Donna* is 4:12, a length that allows its melodic structure to develop.
This record, the fourteenth studio album and seventeenth overall for the American band, was their second release under the Full Moon/Warner Bros. Records label. It was also the last to feature the participation of original bassist and vocalist, Peter Cetera. The album's success was boosted by four singles that reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, and in particular, by the music videos for tracks like "Stay the Night", "You're the Inspiration", and "Hard Habit to Break", which were well-received on MTV.
