The story behind
The song Please Hold On, with its 3:38 duration, is from the album Chicago 17, released on May 14, 1984. This record, which was the fourteenth studio and seventeenth overall for the band Chicago, marked a commercial milestone. As of 2023, it remains their best-selling work, exceeding 6.1 million copies distributed across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. The album generated four singles that reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The broadcast of the music videos for Stay the Night, You're the Inspiration, and Hard Habit to Break on MTV propelled Chicago 17 to a six-time platinum certification by the RIAA. In 1985, the album was recognized with three Grammy Awards.
The production of Chicago 17 was handled by David Foster, marking his second album with the band. The recording featured engineering by Humberto Gatica, who also handled the mixing. This work represented the final collaboration with original bassist and vocalist, Peter Cetera. The band Chicago, formed in 1967 in the city of the same name, established itself as one of the most representative and commercially successful groups in the "Big Bands of Rock" genre, alongside Blood, Sweat & Tears. Initially named Chicago Transit Authority, the group had to shorten its name for legal reasons. The initial lineup included Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Walter Parazaider (saxophones, flute), Robert Lamm (vocals, piano, organ), Terry Kath (guitar, vocals), Peter Cetera (bass, vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums, percussion). The group originated from a core of musicians who were already playing together, being completed with the addition of Pankow and Loughnane, and later Cetera and Lam.
