The story behind
The first time you listen to peregrinos, the opening track of Ultra Sodade, you’re left with the feeling that Kevin Kaarl recorded that song in one take. There are no retakes or layered tracks: the raw sound of the bass, the guitar weaving through a repetitive pattern, and the voice that sounds as if it’s singing in the same room where it was played—all of it feels immediate. It’s not a polished album made in a professional studio, but the result of working with what they had in a small space in Chihuahua, where brothers Kevin Kaarl and Bryan Kaarl built each track from scratch. The 3:49 duration isn’t enough for the song to feel complete; it’s as if time stretches just enough to keep the nostalgia from fading entirely.
The album was released on February 14, 2025, but peregrinos wasn’t born as a track meant for streaming or a hit list. Kaarl wrote it after a breakup, when songs became the only place where he could organize the chaos of his emotions. The word sodade, which gave the album its name, is a Cape Verdean term describing that mix of absence and longing, and the prefix ultra adds another layer of intensity. Bryan Kaarl, who until then hadn’t had an official role in producing their albums, handled the mixing and polishing using digital tools and homemade resources—something that’s evident in the album’s intimate, homegrown feel. They weren’t aiming to sound like a touring band, but like two people telling a story in a hushed voice, without filters.
