The story behind
This song, Pena del alma, is one of those pieces that pierces the chest without warning. It's not just the way Vinicio Capossela weaves words with a rhythm that seems to drag between lament and dance, but that mix of sounds that evokes a southern Italian tavern and a mechanic's workshop at the same time. The recording, made at Mauro Pagani's Officine Meccaniche in 2005, has a raw and organic quality, as if each instrument had been tuned at the perfect moment for the song to breathe on its own. The result is a track that doesn't apologize for its intensity but instead exposes it with the naturalness of someone who knows that pain, sometimes, needs to be sung aloud.
The album Ovunque proteggi, where this track appears, hit the shelves in January 2006 after nearly six years without a new album from Capossela. The official presentation took place at Milano's Chiesa di San Carpoforo, a place that, on its own, already lent an air of intimate ceremony to what was to come.
