The story behind

In Non trattare the piano doesn't sound like a piano. It drags between deep notes that seem to whisper something before Vinicio Capossela's voice enters with that cadence that doesn't ask for permission. There's an air of dark cabaret in the arrangements, as if the song had been recorded in a basement with walls that breathe humidity and lights that flicker to the rhythm of the keys. It's not a track you listen to at first glance: it demands you stay still, let the bass and drums trace a tempo that stretches and contracts without warning, while the harmonica peeks through the silences like a ghost that never quite leaves.

They recorded it in 2005, mostly at the Officine Meccaniche studios of Mauro Pagani, that place where time seems to stand still among exposed wires and old amplifiers. By the time it was released in January 2006, it had already been gestating for nearly six years, far from the bustle of conventional studios. They presented it at the Chiesa di San Carpoforo in Milano, a place that smells of wax and ancient wood, where the echo of voices gets lost among the columns. The album, Ovunque proteggi, ended up winning the Targa Tenco that same year and ranked second on the list of best albums of 2006 according to Mojo magazine, only behind Savane by Ali Farka Touré. Later, Rolling Stone Italia placed it among the hundred most beautiful Italian albums of all time, at position sixty. But the most curious thing is that, despite all that recognition, the song still sounds like a secret shared only among those who listen to it in hushed tones.
