The story behind
Pearl in the Shell, according to DoReSol
“Pearl in the Shell” is one of those songs that stands out for its fusion of synthesizers and catchy melodies, a hallmark of Howard Jones’s style. Released on May 18, 1984, as the fourth single from his debut album, Human's Lib, the track reached number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. One of the most interesting aspects of the song is the participation of saxophonist Davey Payne, known for his work with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, who contributes a solo that enriches the sound texture.
The recording of “Pearl in the Shell” took place in 1983 at Farmyard Studios, located in Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire. Unlike other Jones singles, this one did not include an extended mix upon its initial release, though a longer version later appeared on The 12″ Album. Instead, the single featured “Total Conditioning,” an extended version of “Conditioning,” another track from Human's Lib, incorporating lyrics from several album cuts. Limited editions of the single were also released, one of which came in a disc-shaped design, adding a special touch to its presentation. The production was handled by Rupert Hine, who also shaped the distinctive sound of the album, and the recording was carried out by Stephen W. Tayler. Undoubtedly, “Pearl in the Shell” is a clear example of the creativity and innovation that defined 1980s music.
