The story behind

What is Love?, according to DoReSol

What Is Love? doesn't sound like a song that aims to stay on the surface. Its hook isn't in a catchy chorus or a striking riff, but in a question that repeats insistently: what is love, really? It's not a theme about heartbreak or empty promises, but a direct inquiry that challenges the traditional romantic idea. Jones' voice doesn't sound like he's singing about someone, but about the word itself, as if each repetition of "love" were an attempt to define something everyone uses but few explain.

The song was recorded in a studio where Engineer Stephen W. Tayler and Producer Rupert Hine gave it a clean yet layered sound, as if each instrument were there to sustain that unanswered question. According to Jones' account in a talk with Songfacts, the lyrics were born from his rejection of songs about co-dependency or conditional love. He wanted something more philosophical, more uncomfortable: a theme that wouldn't settle for clichés, but would question them. The result is a song that sounds like an internal dialogue, as if the artist were measuring himself with every word.
