Howard Jones

Howard Jones is an artist who became known for his unique way of blending electronic music with deep messages, creating a distinctive sound in his time. Born in Southampton, England, and raised in High Wycombe, his musical journey began unexpectedly. After giving piano lessons, an accident led one of his students, Jan Smith, to buy him a Moog Prodigy synthesizer. Coincidentally, he received two units, and the combination of both fascinated him, laying the groundwork for his sound experimentation.

His breakthrough in the charts came in 1983 with New Song, a track he described as his personal manifesto. In it, he expressed his desire to convey a message of overcoming: the idea that it is possible to achieve goals if one has the determination and courage needed, freeing oneself from fears and mental limitations. This song, along with others that followed, propelled him to have several more hits the following year and to reach number 1 in the UK with his album Human's Lib. His proposal, which combined synthesizer innovation with reflections on animal welfare and the excesses of life, attracted a diverse audience, from young admirers to more mature listeners who appreciated the musical skill behind his electronic compositions.

More about Howard Jones

Biography

In 1984, he released Like To Get To Know You Well, a song inspired by the spirit of the Olympic Games, which became a worldwide hit. The track even appeared in the film Better Off Dead. His second album, The 12 Inch Album, was an innovative remix proposal with extended versions of his songs. By 1985, with the release of Dream Into Action, he introduced his backing band, which included Caron Wheeler, who would later be part of Soul II Soul, as part of a female vocal trio called Afrodiziak. That same year, Howard had the opportunity to perform at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium, playing Hide And Seek on a piano that once belonged to Freddie Mercury. His last appearance in the UK Top 40 was in 1986, after which he focused more on production and composition.

Later on, Howard Jones also stood out as a vocalist in the metalcore scene. In July 2002, he joined Killswitch Engage, replacing Jesse Leach, just before the release of their album Alive or Just Breathing. His live debut with the band was at the Hellfest in Syracuse, New York, where he captivated the audience. Throughout his nine years with the band, he stood out for his charisma and powerful stage presence, a quality he had already demonstrated since his early days with Blood Has Been Shed. His vocal versatility was notable, ranging from aggressive growls to clean vocals. In January 2012, Howard left Killswitch Engage due to personal issues, including his struggle with type 2 diabetes, which affected his ability to continue with the band’s work. Later, in 2018, he became involved in a new project called Light the Torch, formerly known as Devil You Know.
