When Rubén Blades turned to recording Antecedente in 1988, his band, previously known as Seis del Solar, adopted a new name: Son del Solar. There was an interesting change in instrumentation, where trombones took center stage, replacing some parts previously done with synthesizers. This album marked Blades' return to salsa, a sound he felt older studio recording techniques couldn't capture with the fidelity he sought.

The album Antecedente was well-received, reaching number 8 on Billboard's Tropical Albums chart. Additionally, it won a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Tropical Latin Performance". The song Patria, lasting 5 minutes and 9 seconds, is part of this production. At the time, Robert Christgau commented on how Blades enriched the sound of Son del Solar with salsa trombones, creating a danceable album.
