La marea

When Rubén Blades released the album Antecedente in 1988, it marked a return to salsa roots. For this work, his backing band, previously known as Seis del Solar, was renamed Son del Solar. There was an interesting change in instrumentation: trombones were incorporated to replace some of the parts previously done with synthesizers. Blades himself was in charge of production, and it is said that he was not very satisfied with how older studio recording techniques affected the music's sound.

This album had a good reception, reaching number 8 on Billboard's Tropical Albums chart. Furthermore, Antecedente won a Grammy award in the category of "Best Tropical Latin Performance". The song La marea, with a duration of 3 minutes and 6 seconds, is part of this project. It is interesting to note that Antecedente was often compared to Los Lobos' La Pistola y El Corazón, as both records represented an effort to return to musical origins.
