The story behind
The opening riff of Otra piel is unlike anything Cerati had ever recorded before. It’s not a traditional guitar solo, but a melodic line that repeats like an electric whisper, as if the song itself is breathing between notes. The bass enters afterward, with a groove that doesn’t aim to hit hard, but to weave into that 4:41 loop that seems to float between the organic and the synthetic. What’s most curious is that, despite its minimalist air, the track never loses intensity: every instrument — the drums with their unexpected breaks, the keyboards that appear like flashes — has its space, yet always letting Cerati’s voice carry the weight of the narrative.
They recorded it in 2006, during sessions that blended analog equipment with digital touches, something he’d already been exploring since his days with Soda Stereo. The album Ahí vamos came out in April of that year, and, unlike what often happens with solo releases, it struck a chord in several countries at once: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico welcomed it with sales that surpassed platinum status even before pre-sales ended. In Otra piel, Cerati plays with the idea of a raw yet polished sound, as if every layer of production had been crafted so the listener would feel they’re hearing something live, even if it isn’t. The track ended up being one of the most streamed on the album, though it was never an official single.
