The story behind

One and Only, according to DoReSol

There's a song on 21 that sounds like light at the end of a long tunnel. One and Only isn't about a recent heartbreak, but rather that hope that clings to someone known for years, the kind of love that grows in silence and becomes inevitable. Adele's voice stretches over an uptempo rhythm with touches of blues, yet without falling into drama: it's a ballad that breathes relief, as if time itself had stopped to let her sing at her own pace. The lyrics don't ask for forgiveness nor make demands; they simply invite, with a confidence that seems to come from years of waiting. The detail that most surprises when listening is how the piano and guitar intertwine in a pattern that never repeats the same way, as if each note had its own space to breathe. That rhythmic freedom is what gives it that air of controlled improvisation, something uncommon in songs of this style.

They recorded it at a time when Adele had already spent months out of a relationship that inspired much of 21, but this track doesn't follow that line. As she shared in an interview for the album, she wrote it thinking of someone with whom she always had chemistry, but never dared to cross that line. The producers Rick Rubin and Greg Wells gave it that warm yet direct sound, with Andrew Scheps handling the mix to ensure each instrument breathed in its own time. The result is a song that doesn't sound like a composition exercise, but rather a moment captured in the studio. When it was released in 2011, it wasn't a massive single like Rolling in the Deep or Someone Like You, but it ended up being one of those pieces fans cherish for its sincerity. The album 21 sold over 26 million copies worldwide, and although this song didn't reach number one on the charts, its influence is evident in how people still choose to play it to close concerts or perform live without needing adjustments.
