Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known simply as Adele, is a British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She is one of the best-selling musical artists in the world, with more than 120 million sales between albums and singles. From an early age she showed an interest in music, and in 2006 she graduated from the BRIT School, the same year she signed a contract with XL Recordings after being discovered through some demos that a friend posted on the social network MySpace. In 2008, she released her debut studio album, 19, which reached number 1 on the UK Albums Chart and has been certified eight times platinum in the United Kingdom and triple platinum in the United States. At the 2008 Brit Awards she received the Critics' Choice Award and also won the BBC's Sound of 2008 poll. A year later, at the 51st Grammy Awards, she won the awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Chasing Pavements". According to Rolling Stone magazine, she is the greatest female singer of the 21st century and number 22 of all time. She is one of only 4 people to have won the four general awards at the Grammys, known as "The Big Four": Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. She is the only person in history to have won the three main awards in a single night twice: in 2012 and 2017.
