The story behind

The song *Once in a Lifetime* by Chicago, with its 4:13 duration, is an example of how a band can continue exploring its sound even after decades of career. It was recorded and mixed by Humberto Gatica, under the production of David Foster, who had already worked with them on previous albums. This track is part of *Chicago 17*, released on May 14, 1984. This album became the band's best-selling to date, surpassing 6.1 million copies in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan. Four singles were released from this album that reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, and the music videos for *Stay the Night*, *You're the Inspiration*, and *Hard Habit to Break* had a strong presence on MTV, driving *Chicago 17* to achieve a six-time platinum certification.

The band Chicago, founded in 1967, is recognized as one of the most prominent formations in rock with Big Band influences. Initially named *Chicago Transit Authority*, they had to shorten their name for legal reasons. Throughout their history, the lineup has remained relatively stable, with founding members such as Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Walter Parazaider (saxophones, flute), Robert Lamm (vocals, piano, organ), Terry Kath (guitar, vocals), Peter Cetera (bass, vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums, percussion). *Chicago 17* marked the last album with the participation of bassist and vocalist Peter Cetera. In 1985, the album received three Grammy Awards.
