The story behind

Diving into On Islands, one encounters a piece that, while part of a larger work, possesses a very particular sonic identity. The recording of this song, along with the rest of the album Methods of Silence, took place at the Synsound Studio in Brussels in early 1989. The producer, Dan Lacksman, known for his work with Telex, orchestrated the process using a mix of technological equipment, both current and older, to shape the sound. This approach sought to explore textures and atmospheres, allowing Camouflage, who already had a previous success, greater creative freedom on their second record. The duration of On Islands is 5 minutes and 1 second, a time that allows for the development of the sonic layers that characterize the German trio's proposal.

The album Methods of Silence, released by Atlantic Records in June 1989, positioned Camouflage at a moment of consolidation. The single Love Is a Shield, for example, reached ninth place in the German charts and twentieth on the Billboard Alternative Airplay in the United States, marking a milestone in their career. The band had established a new workspace, dubbed "Boys Factory 2", near their hometown before starting the main recording sessions. This context of experimentation and the collaboration with Dan Lacksman, who is also credited as producer along with the band itself, were fundamental to the conception of Methods of Silence and, consequently, of tracks like On Islands.
