The story behind
The melody of Noche de ronda, a waltz born in 1935 from the pen of Mexican composer Agustín Lara, resonates with a particular story. Although Lara signed it under the pseudonym María Teresa Lara, it was Mexican singer Elvira Ríos who brought it to the big screen in 1937 in the film ¡Esos hombres!. For her, this piece became a distinctive hallmark, one of the most significant achievements of her career. Ríos recorded it on different occasions throughout her career: in 1936 for an RCA Victor single, in 1940 for her Decca album Tropic Nights, in 1957 for RCA Victor's Noche de ronda, and finally in 1974 for Orfeón's album La emocional Elvira Ríos.
This piece has been performed by a variety of artists, including Pedro Vargas, Lydia Mendoza, Toña la Negra, Xavier Cugat, Nestor Mesta Chayres, and Eydie Gormé with Los Panchos. However, the version that perhaps resonates most in certain circles is that of Nat King Cole. His foray into the Latin market materialized with Cole Español in 1958, an album produced by Nelson Riddle. This work, along with A Mis Amigos (1959) and More Cole Español (1962), formed a trilogy of themed albums in Spanish. The orchestral recording of Cole Español took place in Havana, Cuba, and Cole added his vocals in Los Angeles, California, in June of that year. The album, which included the instrumental piece "Tú, mi delirio" on which Cole contributed with piano, was later re-released as Español and More, Vol. 1. In 2007, Cole Español was recognized and included in the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame, and it reached number 12 on the album charts of Billboard magazine.
