The story behind
The recording of Quizás, quizás, quizás (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps) by Nat King Cole has a particularity that makes it stand out. This song is part of Cole Español, a 1958 album that Nat King Cole conceived specifically for the Latin market. Under the arrangements of Nelson Riddle, the orchestra recorded its musical part in Havana, Cuba. Later, Cole added his voice in June, but he did so from Los Angeles, California, a production process that divided the work between two geographies. The song has a duration of 2:45. This record was the first in a series of three Spanish-themed albums that Cole would record, followed by A Mis Amigos in 1959 and More Cole Español in 1962. The original album was later reissued under the title Español and More, Vol. 1, and managed to reach position number 12 on Billboard magazine's LP chart. Its relevance was recognized in 2007, when it was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame.
Behind this versatility to tackle the Spanish repertoire was Nathaniel Adams Coles, the jazz pianist and singer the world knew as Nat "King" Cole. Born in Montgomery in 1919, his musical training began at home, with his mother, Perlina Adams, being his only piano teacher. She played the organ at the Baptist Church, where his father, Edward Coles, was a deacon and later a minister. The family moved to Chicago, to the Bronzeville neighborhood, a vibrant place with a rich nightlife and jazz clubs. There, Nat soaked up the music of artists like Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, who became a key inspiration for him. In the mid-1930s, still a teenager, Nat began his artistic career. He adopted the name Nat Cole, dropping the "s" from his family surname. His older brother, Eddie, a bassist, joined his band.
