The story behind

The version of Las mañanitas (with Mariachis) performed by Nat King Cole presents a particular facet of this artist, who ventured into the Latin market with a series of albums exploring that sound. This track, with a duration of 2:58, is part of Cole Español, an album released in 1958. What's interesting about this project is that the orchestral music was recorded in Havana, Cuba, while Cole's vocals were added later in June, in Los Angeles, California. This album, along with A Mis Amigos (1959) and More Cole Español (1962), forms a trilogy of Spanish-language works that sought to connect with a new audience. The album Cole Español had a measurable impact, reaching number 12 on the Billboard album chart.

Nathaniel Adams Coles, known worldwide as Nat King Cole, was born in Montgomery in 1919. His musical training had deep roots in jazz and gospel music, influenced by his father, who was a deacon and later a minister, and his mother, who gave him his first piano lessons. The family moved to Chicago, where Nat grew up immersed in the vibrant jazz club scene of the Bronzeville neighborhood, listening to figures like Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines. It was precisely Hines' inspiration that prompted him to start his artistic career in the mid-1930s. He adopted the name Nat Cole, and his brother Eddie joined his band. The nickname "King" was earned in one of those venues, and his career even led him to participate in tours, such as one with Eubie Blake, which culminated in his settling in Long Beach, California. The album Cole Español, and specifically the song Las mañanitas (with Mariachis), are part of this artistic journey that explored new musical frontiers.
