The story behind

No lo soñé, according to DoReSol

Diego Torres began his career with a fresh sound that blended reggae, ballads, and funk, and in 1994 he solidified that style with Tratar de Estar Mejor, his second album. It was clear then that he wasn’t just another artist: songs like Deja de pedir perdón or San Salvador stood out from everything else being heard at the time. Yet among those tracks, one stands out for how it breaks from the conventional: No lo soñé, a song that doesn’t follow the usual rhythm of its albummates. Its 4:30 length isn’t accidental: it gives space to a development that, while not extensive, creates a unique atmosphere, almost as if the song breathes between verses.

The recording of Tratar de Estar Mejor was a pivotal moment for Torres. By then, he had already moved on from his TV days on La Banda del Golden Rocket and his self-titled debut, produced by Cachorro López, which sold 200,000 copies. But this second work took him to another level: it didn’t just sell 430,000 units in Argentina alone—it positioned him as the most in-demand artist of 1994 and 1995 in the country. No lo soñé emerged in that context, when Torres was already certain his music could cross borders. In fact, that same year he was invited to Spain to contribute to a tribute album for Joan Manuel Serrat, where he performed Penélope. The song, then, wasn’t just another track on a successful album: it was part of a moment when Torres went from being a promising artist to a name the industry couldn’t ignore.
