The story behind
When Per Gessle wrote the basis for what would become Neverending Love, he originally intended it for another artist. The song, initially titled Svarta glas (which translates to Black Glass), was offered to Pernilla Wahlgren. However, she did not record it but suggested it to her brother, Niclas Wahlgren, who did record his own version. It was at this point that EMI intervened, requesting that the release of Niclas's version be canceled. The reason: Per Gessle was working on an English version of the song with Marie Fredriksson, and the record label believed that releasing Niclas's track could interfere with Marie's solo career, which was rapidly growing.
The recording of Neverending Love took place between March and April 1986 at EMI Studios in Stockholm. The result was a pop track with a duration of 3 minutes and 29 seconds, which became Roxette's first single. Initially, EMI planned to release the single only outside of Sweden. However, they changed their minds, and the song ended up reaching third place on the Swedish singles charts. This track was part of the duo's debut album, Pearls of Passion, which went on sale in October 1986. Two music videos were produced for the song: one filmed in Luxembourg in 1986, and another directed by Rikard Petrelius a year later in Sweden. The musical composition is by Per Gessle, while the lyrics also bear his signature.
