The story behind

When exploring Man Research (Clapper) by Gorillaz, one discovers that part of its sonic identity comes from a particular musical fragment. The song, lasting 4 minutes and 33 seconds, incorporates a sample from In the Hall of the Mountain Queen, a piece that is part of Raymond Scott's work on his album Manhattan Research, Inc. This use, initially uncredited in the album's release, led to an out-of-court settlement, adding a layer of history to the creation of this track.

This track is part of the band's debut album, titled Gorillaz, which was released on March 26, 2001, in the United Kingdom under the Parlophone label. This release marked a milestone, leading the virtual band to reach third place on the British charts and sell millions of copies globally. The success was such that Gorillaz was recognized in the Guinness Book for being the most successful virtual band. The album's sound is a mix of genres such as trip hop, rap rock, art rock, hip hop, dub, reggae, Latin music, psychedelia, and punk rock, showing constant experimentation. The band Gorillaz, a creation of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett in 1998, is distinguished by its four fictional members: 2-D, Noodle, Murdoc Niccals, and Russel Hobbs. Their universe unfolds through animations and music videos, with Albarn being the only permanent musician in reality. In the production of Man Research (Clapper), Jason Cox, Dan the Automator, and Tom Girling participated, in addition to the band itself, who also served as recording engineers alongside Tom Girling. Over time, Remi Kabaka Jr., who for years was the voice of Russel Hobbs, officially joined Albarn and Hewlett as a member in 2019, a fact documented in Gorillaz: Reject False Icons, after collaborating with the group since 2016.
