Malas intenciones

The first time I heard Malas intenciones wasn’t on a record, but live, at the La Romareda stadium. The band had already been touring for years when that song arrived, but in Zaragoza the sound became denser, as if the city gave the riffs a different weight. The bass of Joaquín Cardiel and the drums of Pedro Andreu drive a rhythm that never stops, while the guitars of Juan Valdivia and Enrique Bunbury intertwine in a game of repetitions that seems endless. The lyrics, short and direct, speak of a toxic relationship without beating around the bush: there’s no room for forgiveness when the other person has already proven to be harmful. That contrast between the harshness of the words and the hypnotic melody is what makes the song stick in your head hours after listening to it.

Recorded at the Kirios studios in Madrid under the production of Phil Manzanera, Malas intenciones was born at a time when the band was seeking a sound more forceful than their debut album. The result was a record that blended gothic rock with touches of hard rock and pop, something uncommon in the Spanish scene at the time. When Senderos de Traición was released in 1990, it became Héroes del Silencio’s first number-one album in Spain, but what’s most interesting is that the record achieved something few works of the era did: sounding fresh without losing power. The final mix, done at Metropolis Studios in London by Keith Bessey, gave it that dark shine that defines the song, as if every note were wrapped in a layer of melancholy. At exactly 3:47, the track doesn’t overstay its welcome, nor does it cut short: it’s precisely what its repetitive structure demands, that loop that drags you along without you noticing.
