The story behind

Majestic Dance, according to DoReSol

Return to Forever recorded Majestic Dance in February 1976 at Caribou Ranch studios near Nederland, Colorado, a place already smelling of legend for hosting sessions by Stanley Clarke and Chick Corea. The five-minute-and-one-second track is not just another cut on Romantic Warrior —their first album for Columbia Records after leaving Polydor— but the piece where the band decided to drop the "featuring Chick Corea" credit from the cover, as if the group, now solidified, no longer needed introductions.

Recorded live with gear pushed to the limit, the sound of Majestic Dance breathes that mix of technical precision and freedom that defines the jazz-rock of the era: Corea’s keyboards tangle with Al Di Meola’s guitar in a dialogue that doesn’t sound rehearsed, but like a conversation between musicians who know exactly where the line is.

The entire album was born as a response to Rick Wakeman’s The Myths and Legends of King Arthur, but where the British keyboardist explored prog rock with harps and orchestrations, Return to Forever did it with distortion, sharp grooves, and a medieval nod woven into the riffs. Majestic Dance, in particular, captures that tension: Clarke’s bass weaves lines that feel plucked from a knightly tale, while Lenny White’s drums and Airto Moreira’s percussion pulse between tribal and electric. The recording, certified Gold in the U.S., wasn’t an accident: the producers — Corea, Clarke, Di Meola, and White — worked side by side in the studio, no rush but no pauses, as if they knew they were writing a key page of jazz fusion. And they did it in three weeks, with borrowed gear and the pressure to prove that, after years of experimentation, they could sound like no one else.
