The story behind
The song M1 A1 by Gorillaz greets us with a particular atmosphere, marked by a monotonous synthesizer and the repetition of the phrase "Hello? Is anyone there?". This distinctive introduction is no coincidence: it was taken directly from the beginning of the 1985 film Day of the Dead, directed by George A. Romero, a detail that, from its 5 minutes and 44 seconds of duration, immerses us in the band's creative universe. These types of sound elements, which evoke a sense of isolation or search, connect with the essence of Gorillaz as a project that explores narratives and characters through its music.
The band Gorillaz, conceived in 1998 by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, is distinguished by being a virtual group, with four fictional members: 2-D, Noodle, Murdoc Niccals, and Russel Hobbs. Their proposal materializes through animated music videos, both traditional and computer-generated, interviews, and shorts that build an entire narrative universe. In the real world, Damon Albarn is the permanent musician. The self-titled debut album, Gorillaz, released by Parlophone on March 26, 2001, in the United Kingdom, was a notable success, reaching third place on the British charts and selling around seven million copies worldwide. This achievement led them to be recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful virtual band. The album is a melting pot of genres, experimenting with trip hop, rap rock, art rock, hip hop, dub, reggae, Latin music, psychedelic music, and punk rock, and from it came singles such as Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, and Rock the House. Over time, the project's structure consolidated, and in 2019, Remi Kabaka Jr, who had been the voice of Russel Hobbs for years, officially joined Albarn and Hewlett, as documented in Gorillaz: Reject False Icons.
