The story behind
The song Luna y sol, part of Manu Chao's debut album, Clandestino, released in 1998, offers a sonic proposal that departs from conventional recordings. The artist himself handled much of the production in various locations around the world, using portable equipment, something described in the album notes as the Estudio Clandestino (Clandestine Studio). This more intimate and nomadic way of working allowed him to capture a very particular sound. The duration of this piece is 2:56.
Manu Chao, whose full name is José Manuel Arturo Tomás Chao Ortega, was born in Paris, France, in 1961, to Spanish parents. His musical journey began on the streets of Paris and with bands like Hot Pants and Los Carayos, where he already experimented with mixing languages and styles. Later, together with his brother Antoine Chao and other companions, he formed Mano Negra in 1987, a project that had significant impact, especially in Europe and Latin America. After the separation of Mano Negra in 1995, Manu Chao began his solo career, usually touring with his band Radio Bemba and currently residing in Barcelona. His music often addresses themes such as love, life in marginalized neighborhoods, and immigration, reflecting his own experiences and those of his family, who left Spain during the era of Francisco Franco.
