The story behind
The song Clandestino, which gives its title to Manu Chao's first solo album, was born from a deep reflection on borders and the reality of those who cross from more impoverished countries to Europe. The artist himself commented that looking around, he could perceive that a good part of the people on the street lived in a state of clandestinity. This piece, released as the second single on July 11, 2000, became a sonic reflection of this theme, wrapped in a style that fuses Reggae with Latin music.
The album Clandestino, released in 1998, was largely recorded by Manu Chao himself in different parts of the world, using portable equipment that he himself called Estudio Clandestino (Clandestine Studio). This way of working, almost on the move, allowed him to capture unique sounds and atmospheres. The song Clandestino reached number 78 on the charts in France at the time, and curiously, reappeared in November 2013, reaching number 196. The single also included other songs such as Mama Call and a version of Bienvenido A Tijuana. The influence of Manu Chao's political ideas, linked to anarchism and the struggle for freedom, is clearly perceived in this composition, as in others in his repertoire.
