The story behind

Lucky Man, according to DoReSol

There are songs that, when you play them, invite you to dismantle their structure to understand how they were built. Lucky Man is one of those. Written by Richard Ashcroft, this piece from The Verve's album Urban Hymns was released as a single on November 24, 1997. Its main melody, which evokes a sense of calm and reflection, moves away from the more explosive energy of other tracks on the record. Ashcroft described the inspiration behind the lyrics as the stage of a relationship where superficiality is transcended, reaching the essence of people. The song resonated enough to reach number seven on the UK singles chart and became one of the band's two hits on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks, reaching number 16.

The recording of Urban Hymns had its own challenges. The album was conceived at Olympic Studios in London, with The Verve working with producers like Martin "Youth" Glover and engineer Chris Potter. The band, which had briefly split in August 1995, reunited for this project, adding Simon Tong and seeking a sound that would culminate in this record. Lucky Man, with its 4:53 duration, was released in various formats, including CD and vinyl singles. Among the B-sides that accompanied its release were "History," an earlier track by the band, and "Happiness More or Less," a remixed version of Lucky Man that prioritized drums, bass, and strings, removing much of the guitar and vocals. Even Bono from U2 mentioned Lucky Man as one of the six songs he would have liked to write in the two decades prior to 2006. The music video, filmed in London, shows the band in an urban setting, with Richard Ashcroft performing the song on acoustic guitar.
