The lyrics tell the story of a boy who leaves his hometown to get to New York, looking for something better. Lou Gramm, the vocalist, said that it's almost like his personal story, because he also left his home in Gates, New York, for the city.
The song has a strong rhythm, with a clavinet that makes it sound different. It was a success in the United States and Canada, reaching top 20 on Billboard and top 22 in Canada.
